Sustainable use and leave-no-trace

At Trasti & Trine we care for our guests, the surrounding nature, the local community and the distinctive character of Northern Norway. By giving our guests an insight into the amazing nature and culture of Finnmark, we aim to inspire and share knowledge about sustainable use and leave-no-trace practices.

Our homestead

The story of Trasti & Trine began when Johnny turned up with a bucket of fish for Trine's dogs and invited himself in for coffee. What started with food, dogs and good conversations gradually grew into both love and a shared dream.

With two houses and two kennels side by side, surrounded by pine forest and silence, the journey to create more than just a place to live and work began. Gradually the homestead developed into the vibrant place it is today — filled with people, animals, culinary experiences and year-round activities. A place for small and large adventures, joy of life and personal achievement.

This is where we who work at Trasti & Trine live, together with our Alaskan huskies, a few hens and, not least, many friendly guests. The kennel where it all began is still the starting point for fast-paced activities both summer and winter. Our guests can stay in the cabin or the guesthouse, and in the restaurant we serve locally sourced and organic food of the highest quality.

By the way, we do more than serve great food — we also want to share our enthusiasm for quality ingredients and the North Norwegian kitchen with our visitors. That's why we have an indoor teaching kitchen, an outdoor kitchen and our own bakery. In addition we host autumn and spring markets, and a summer café during the warmer months. But when evening comes and the day's adventures wind down, silence and pine forest still surround us.

This should be a good place to be for both animals and people, big and small.

Autumn Market

Welcome to our annual Autumn Market at Trasti & Trine.
In September we invite friends, neighbours and visitors to a day filled with local producers, handicrafts and a warm atmosphere.
Here you will find a varied selection of ceramics, handmade products, culinary experiences and much more. Created by talented exhibitors from the surrounding area.

Our kitchen garden and greenhouse

On the homestead you'll find our kitchen garden and the large greenhouse — the heart of our green initiative. Here things sprout and grow from early winter to late autumn.

With Trine's green thumb and love for the soil, we cultivate a variety of herbs, vegetables and edible flowers. Our food scraps become compost that returns nutrients to the soil, creating ingredients that carry the flavours of the local area. This is what makes the meals here genuine, close and shaped by the northern seasons.

We also forage from the forest and nature around us, and work closely with local farmers, fishers and hunters. When you eat with us, you taste the whole area and the changing seasons.

“Dog sledding in all kinds of weather as should be expected in winter and on the plateau. Trine, as a safe and warm guide, led us safely and well around, with food preparation that was delightful for the palate and the body! The dogs are real workhorses and so incredibly social, easy to handle, and wonderful cuddle buddies! We even got to see the sun on the last day, which also concluded the drive home with an aurora!”

    Our team

Trasti is the brain, hand and heart behind most of the flavour experiences at Trasti & Trine. Over 30 years in the kitchen have given him experience, knowledge and instinct by the bucketful. He is still on an eternal quest for the perfect meal with the best ingredients and the most unique flavours.
Over the past ten years Trine has guided more than 5,000 guests on tours. Few know the dogs, the tracks and the stories better than she does. At the same time she is full of ideas for new trips and exciting experiences for both two- and four-legged guests. Trine oversees most things and has a hand in almost everything that happens on the homestead.
Born in 1999, she has been driving dogs for over 20 years — she started at two. Dog sledding is her great passion. She runs the kennel with deep love for all our four-legged friends. Hanna is the only person who has raced in all three classes of the Finnmarksløpet; she has won two of them. In 2022 she was Rookie of the Year in the Iditarod, the world's longest sled dog race. Maybe she'll be yours
Meet Rikki, the Dane who has called Alta home for many years! He now joins us as general manager, full of energy, good ideas and a strong passion for creating great experiences for our guests. We are very happy to have him on the team and look forward to developing Trasti & Trine together with him.

During your stay you may see this little fellow running around! He is not part of the dog team (he lets the huskies do the hard work), but don't be fooled — he takes his guarding duties very seriously! Expect him to keep an eye on the kitchen, watch over guests during their stay, and occasionally demand cuddles as part of his job.
Erik started here with us as an apprentice. The best apprentices we keep. He is our main baker. He has a love for bread dough and for apprentices. Erik loves to share his knowledge, especially about hunting, and he is very patient. If you join a cooking class, you might meet him.
The punk kid who started as an apprentice with us has now returned after a trip to Oslo.
Our pastry chef, Andrea — the Italian — is the mastermind behind our pastries that you have likely seen and, hopefully, tasted at our café events.
He's the one who speaks a little unclear Norwegian — not surprising. He's Danish but has lived in Alta for many years. He commutes between Alta and Alaska. Ebbe can fix and build anything. He is a guide in winter and caretaker all year round. He has many stories about hunting and fishing. You'll surely hear some if he becomes your guide on the dog trip.
Our Swedish–Sámi guide Linnea has been with us for X years now. She has a strong commitment to dog life and a deep connection to Sámi culture and the northern nature, which shapes how she conveys the experiences. Have you had the chance to have her as your guide yet?
