A taste of dog sledding

The sound of eager, expectant dogs fills the air. They stand ready in front of the sleds, waiting only to get going. Maybe you feel that tingle of excitement and anticipation yourself. The gate opens. The dogs lunge forward. Then it becomes silent. Wonderfully quiet. The sound of paws and sled runners is the only thing that breaks the stillness. Are you ready to try dog sledding?

See our activities

The dogs are the heart of everything we do. We always put their welfare first and want to share the joy of activities with our dogs, the nature and life in the north with our guests.

Where the adventure begins

In the kennel many happy Alaska Huskies are waiting for you. They each have their own dog houses with nameplates. You will be given a card with the names of the dogs you will be handling. Then it’s time to get started. The harnesses are in their proper place and you only need to find the right dog.

This is how you prepare the dogs, all by yourself. We are of course present at all times and will help if you want. When everything is ready, the dogs will set off. We open the gate and head out into the forest — it becomes quiet and we can enjoy the eager dogs, the weather and the landscape.

One of our guides leads the way and you follow behind. Along the route we travel through forest, open country and along the Alta River. When the ice has formed we can also run on the river itself. You ride two people per sled; we stop halfway and you can swap places if you like.

After a while we return to the kennel. The dogs go back to their houses and you join in helping. Then we gather around the fire with something warm to drink and homemade baked treats to nibble on.

Those of us who have been with you on the tour have trained the dogs all autumn and winter, and have competed in several races — everything from the world’s longest down to shorter events. We’re happy to tell you about this, as well as how we train, feed and care for all our friends at the kennel.

Prepare for the tour

Remember that you are traveling into northern Norway. We provide clothing and equipment adapted to the conditions, but we recommend you bring a few personal favorites for extra comfort during your stay.
