At Trasti & Trine we believe that value creation leaves traces. Some are visible, others less so, but every choice we make affects the people around us, the communities we are part of, and the nature we live in, with, and from. Forkprint is our way of understanding and taking responsibility for those traces. It is not a project, a campaign, or a set of measures. It is a mindset that has grown through many years of work, experience, missteps, learning and a life close to the nature, the people and the place we call home.
Our DNA
Today there are many terms for this way of thinking: sustainability, regenerative development, corporate social responsibility. For us, Forkprint is something more fundamental. It is part of our DNA — an understanding that no business exists alone and that what we create always builds on contributions from others. Guests who visit us experience the result of an interplay between people, raw materials, craftsmanship, local communities, nature and knowledge developed over generations. Therefore we believe that value creation also carries a responsibility to give something back to what makes that value creation possible.
This understanding has deep roots in the North. In Sámi, the concept meahcci is often described as life in, with and from nature — a sense of reciprocity between people, society and the landscape, where one is not outside of nature but part of it. Although Forkprint originates at Trasti & Trine, this idea helps shape how we see the world around us. It reminds us that we are not only stewards of a business, but also of relationships, knowledge and resources that should continue to live on after us.
For us, Forkprint therefore concerns much more than climate and environment alone. It is about the people we work with, the local community we belong to, the stories we choose to tell, the crafts we want to preserve and the nature that underpins everything we do. It is about building resilient local communities, creating opportunities for people, highlighting knowledge and traditions, and meeting nature with respect and humility. At the same time it is about recognising that we are never finished. Forkprint is not a goal to be reached but a direction to follow.
Through Forkprint we want to make responsibility visible in practice. That is why we work on concrete measures related to community, people and nature. That is why we report on climate and resource use. That is why we build partnerships with people and businesses who share our values. And that is why we established the Trasti & Trine Forkprint Foundation, so the work of giving back can continue independently of individuals, leaders or generations.
We do not believe that the most important traces we leave are measured by size alone. We believe they are measured by what we contribute around us: in the people who gain opportunities, in the local communities that are strengthened, in the nature that is managed with respect, and in the stories that continue to be told long after the visit is over. This is what Forkprint is about — not just what we take with us, but what we choose to leave behind.
Food
At Trasti & Trine Forkprint becomes visible in the small choices we make every day. In the kitchen this is about ingredients, seasons, foraging, growing and respect for the resources we use. The food we serve should not only taste of the place, but also reflect care for nature, people and the craft behind it.
- We use local, seasonal ingredients
- We prioritise organic products
- We forage ingredients from the surrounding area, based on what the season has to offer
- We care about recycling; food waste goes to the compost and the garden, or suitable leftovers are given to our dogs and hens
- In the greenhouse and the kitchen garden we grow some of what is served in the restaurant
Rooms
In the rooms Forkprint is about calm, consideration and conscious choices that make the stay better without unnecessary consumption. We want guests to feel at home while together we take care of the resources around us. That is why we choose local renewable energy, natural heating, environmentally adapted products and solutions that reduce waste, water use and energy consumption.
- Our local electricity supplier, Ishavskraft, provides us with renewable energy
- Both Hytta and the restaurant have fireplaces that provide natural heat
- We use Swan-labelled cleaning products, the official Nordic eco-label for environmentally friendly products
- We have chosen not to provide fresh bed linen and towels every day, to reduce environmental impact
- When replacing light bulbs we use energy-saving bulbs
- We avoid single-use products
- We sort waste and hope you can help us with that. There are several labelled bins in your room
- We appreciate if you turn off the lights when you are not in your room — to save the environment and also to improve the view of the northern lights!
Activities
In our activities Forkprint is about presence, safety and respect for the nature we move through. That is why we choose non-motorised outdoor experiences, letting weather, conditions, season and landscape set the frame. When food and drink are part of the activities, we try to use locally sourced and organic products where possible, so the experience also tastes of the place.
- In all our outdoor activities we avoid the use of motorised vehicles
- Our food and drink activities include locally sourced and organic products
- In many of our activities we use locally sourced or organic products
Workplace
At the workplace Forkprint is about people, belonging and the opportunity to grow through work. We aim to be a local employer where young people gain experience, responsibility and pride, while guests meet people who know the place best. Through work training and inclusive practices we also want to open up more routes into working life.
- We employ many young people from the local community as part-time staff. This creates local employment and gives our guests local information from those who know the place best.
- We also offer work placement programs for people who need job training
