Health and Safety – Guest’s Responsibility and Our Facilitation

Trasti & Trine offers experiences in Arctic nature that involve both physical activities and exposure to weather, terrain, and other conditions that may affect safety. To ensure a safe and responsible execution of our activities, the following terms apply:

Duty to Provide Health Information

Guests are required to inform Trasti & Trine in good time before an activity of any physical or mental conditions that may affect their participation. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Heart and lung diseases
  • Physical disabilities
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Pregnancy
  • Life-dependent medication
  • Type 1 Diabetes
  • Mental health challenges

Failure to provide information may mean we cannot ensure proper facilitation, and participation will then be at the guest’s own risk.

Safety Responsibility and Risk Awareness

Nature-based activities carry inherent risks. In line with current recommendations, we make every effort to:

  • Assess and reduce risks through safety routines and training.
  • Provide qualified guides with relevant competence.
  • Inform guests about safety routines and expected behavior.

Guests are obliged to follow all safety instructions given by staff. Breach of these instructions may result in exclusion from activities without refund.

Guest’s Own Responsibility for Fitness

Guests at Trasti & Trine are responsible for assessing whether they are physically and mentally fit to participate in the activity. We recommend consulting a doctor if unsure.

Illness and Infection Control

Guests with illness, respiratory infections, or other contagious conditions are asked to stay home. This follows infection control principles from the Norwegian Directorate of Health and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. We reserve the right to deny participation in case of infection risk.

Disclaimer of Liability

Trasti & Trine disclaims liability for injuries, accidents, or health complications resulting from:

  • Missing or incorrect information from the guest
  • Participation without necessary physical or mental capability
  • Breach of safety instructions
  • Participation while under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances

Insurance – Guest’s Responsibility When Participating in Activities

Trasti & Trine offers Arctic nature experiences that may involve increased risk, such as dog sledding, puppy walks, and other outdoor activities. We emphasize the following:

Requirement of Valid Travel Insurance

All guests are required to have valid travel insurance that covers unforeseen events such as illness, injury, and medical repatriation within Norway.

Extended Coverage for Risk Activities

Standard travel insurance often does not cover activities considered “risk activities,” such as dog sledding and similar. It is the guest’s responsibility to:

  • Check whether their insurance covers such activities
  • Purchase additional coverage if necessary

In most cases, a special agreement is required to cover high-risk activities.

CFAR (Cancel For Any Reason) Insurance – Especially Recommended for Cruise Guests

For guests traveling by cruise or with extensive travel plans involving significant prepaid expenses (e.g., flights, hotels, excursions), we recommend considering CFAR insurance. This additional coverage:

  • Allows cancellation for any reason
  • Provides reimbursement up to 75% of non-refundable costs
  • Must usually be purchased within 14–21 days of the first trip payment
  • Requires full trip coverage to be valid

CFAR is especially relevant for cruise travelers since such trips are often planned long in advance and involve large non-refundable expenses. It provides extra security if you need to cancel due to personal, health, or practical reasons not covered by regular insurance.

No Liability for Insufficient Coverage

Trasti & Trine disclaims any liability for financial loss, damage, or inconvenience resulting from insufficient insurance coverage.

Guest’s Responsibility for Damage to Equipment

Trasti & Trine provides specialized equipment to guests, including dog sleds, clothing, technical equipment, and other gear necessary for activities. This equipment is valuable and must be handled with care.

Part 1. Guest’s Responsibility

Guests must handle all equipment with care and follow instructions given by guides and staff. If damage occurs due to:

  • Negligent use
  • Breach of safety instructions
  • Intentional misuse

Trasti & Trine may demand compensation for repair or replacement. A deductible of up to NOK 12,000 may be charged if the damage is deemed significant and unavoidable.

Part 2. Assessment of Responsibility

We acknowledge that responsibility can be difficult to determine when a guide is present. Each case will therefore be evaluated individually, and we will always aim for a fair and dialogue-based solution. The assessment will consider, among other things:

  • Whether the guest received adequate training
  • Whether the equipment was in proper condition
  • Whether the damage could have been avoided with normal use

Part 3. No Prepayment or Deposit

We do not require prepayment or deposit for equipment. It is therefore important that guests are aware of their responsibility. In case of serious damage, a compensation claim may be issued afterward, based on documented damage and costs.

Part 4. Insurance Recommendation

We recommend that guests check whether their travel insurance covers liability for damage to rented or borrowed equipment and, if necessary, purchase additional coverage.

Reference to Terms and Responsibility

We recommend all guests of Trasti & Trine carefully read their insurance terms and contact their insurance provider if in doubt. Some insurance policies do not cover incidents occurring under the influence of alcohol or gross negligence.

Our Sustainable Choice – Trasti & Trine Reduced Forkprint Program

At Trasti & Trine, nature is part of who we are. We forage, hunt, and grow the food we serve, and we draw energy from local hydropower here in Alta. Through our Reduced Forkprint Program, we choose local ingredients, pick berries by hand, and cultivate our own vegetables, ensuring that every meal reflects care and sustainability.

We have opted out of motorized experiences, instead inviting you to genuine encounters with nature, alongside our 70 Alaskan huskies.

Your support is more than a contribution. It helps nurture a greener future and preserves the peace and strength of the surrounding landscape. If you would prefer not to participate, we fully respect your choice and take full responsibility ourselves. Your contribution will be refunded in full, and the amount is covered entirely from our own funds, provided the request is made no later than the day before your arrival.

Welcome home, to Trasti & Trine. Thank you for joining us on this journey.

Force Majeure

Unless otherwise expressly stated in these booking terms, the Provider is not responsible or obliged to provide compensation if our contractual obligations are affected by “unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances.” This includes any event beyond our control whose consequences could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Such circumstances include, but are not limited to, war, terrorist acts (or threats thereof), civil unrest, significant health risks (such as outbreaks of serious disease at the destination), natural disasters (e.g., flood, earthquake, snowstorm, or other extreme weather), situations making it impossible to travel safely to or remain at the destination, actions by authorities or local bodies (including port or river authorities), labor disputes, closed locks, nuclear accidents, fires, chemical or biological hazards, unavoidable technical problems with transport, as well as any other event outside the Provider’s control.

Dispute Resolution

Any dispute arising in connection with this agreement, including questions regarding its existence, validity, or termination, shall be governed by Norwegian law. The parties agree to submit to the jurisdiction of Alta District Court for resolution of such disputes. Alternatively, legal action may be brought before Oslo District Court, at Trasti & Trine AS, in accordance with the Norwegian Dispute Act §§ 4-4 or 4-5(2). This agreement on jurisdiction and Norwegian law applies unless it conflicts with mandatory national or international legislation.

All guests, employees, third parties, and equipment are insured through Trasti & Trine AS’s Third Party Liability Insurance / Public Liability and Product Liability Insurance.
